Moussaka

Sadly. We have to downgrade this restaurant from our previous two visits which rendered it 5 stars at the time (3 years ago). We specifically side detoured on our North Cascades hiking trip to eat at this restaurant. Much to our disappointment, the meal was not as delicious.

The restaurant currently (September 2021) only does Take Out Orders and doesn’t even do outside seating. We don’t blame them for the lack of indoor, but no outdoor? That was a bit disappointing. We wish we had called ahead to ask, but a Google review from a month ago by Ciera Gump showed photo of indoor dining so we didn’t think to call ahead.

They let us use the outdoor area, but we had to eat from To Go boxes. Sadly, it ended up being our most environmentally non-friendly meal as the wind swooshed away our plastic take out bag then another strong gust swooshed away my empty containers that I was holding with my feet, but one slight lift of my foot and it all went careening into the street where it immediately got ran over by a truck. It was quite tragic. And comical. We don’t blame the restaurant for the windy conditions, but having an outside trashcan could have avoided all this. (Or providing for outdoor dining on actual plates.)

So. Putting aside the havoc of how to do dining arrangments that Covid has brought upon the poor restaurants. Let’s talk food.

Husband’s moussaka was almost as good as last time. My prawn dish, however, fell short of expectations. The sauce was over cooked and probably tangier than should have been – that tang that’s brought on by burning the sauce for too long. For the price paid it was disappointing. The prawns themselves were very fresh and delicious. The Spanakopita would likely have been good if it didn’t have to sit in a box steaming the philo dough and taking away any and all crunch it may have had.

In our minds for food like this to have it To Go just doesn’t work. It’s too pricey and foods like the Spanakopita you can’t let it sit in a steaming box. We decided to try doing it To Go based on recent reviews stating that they love taking the food To Go from here. I now kindly disagree with those reviews.

We’re pretty sure that the experience would have been different had we gotten to eat indoors, but in the future we won’t detour to Anacortes for our Greek food fix. (We may, however, detour to visit Pelican Bay Books where we spent four hours waiting for Greek Islands Restaurant to open.)

Restaurant has had a change of ownership and we were a tad worried. Our current opinion is that the place is simply not as good as it was once was. The authenticity may have blown away with the Anacortes winds.

Moussaka – was almost as good as the last time David ordered it – he thought it was very good
Greek Island Prawns – The sauce did not turn out well.
(Not pictured) It also comes with side of veggies (contained overcooked & wilted broccoli). Rice which was very yummy!. A half of a medium sized potato that was a bit too firm for my taste. It wasn’t crunchy, but like a plastic fork could not fork it so in The Good Place fashion I told it to “fork it!”
They let us use the tables outdoors, but it was incredibly windy so…
…we took it indoors to our car halfway through.
Spanakopita. Sadly, not crunchy cause it’s been getting steamed up in the box.
Added this to show food photo comparables from when we visited in 2017 and got to eat indoors and restaurant was managed by a different owner.
