Would I Recommend It?
Um. Hells, yes!
Thoughts?
I braced myself halfway through the book for the tragic ending that was sure to come. For the heartache and pain. For that gut wrenching aftermath of a loss of someone that was sure to come. I totally braced myself for it all. And as the pages inched closer and closer to the end I thought I’d escaped the clutches of those strong emotions–that it’s just gonna be a mellow ending–compliments of Bea calling “bullshit” on it all.
And then. Then the final chapter happened. Where it all hit at once. Suddenly and without warning. Because I had let my guard down. It hit with the inescapable and inevitable force of an avalanche and it all came crashing down around me wrapping me in it’s folds of tragic beauty for there was no avoiding it. And I lay there in bed and I cried and did my best to finish the last two pages. Just streams of tears came rolling down both sides of my face. The kind you want to hold back so you don’t look like a sobbing mess next to your husband, but there was no escaping it as it required an entire face washing with cold water.
There is so much heart in this story. It is so beautifully and smartly written.
Just. Oh my gosh. Loved it.
PS: In case you’re worried about it being too sappy of a story, it is also one of those, “Oh, YEAH! Take that!” It’s really pretty much just up to you what you want to take away from it.
Quotable Quotes
“The absence of judgment is jarring. A kind of existential vertigo.” – page 264
“Blink, and the years fall away like leaves.” – page 31
“She is at odds with everything, she does not fit, an insult to her sex, a stubborn child in a woman’s form…” – page 33
There are so many others, but many I won’t list because they’d be spoilers.
