Would I Recommend It?
Absolutely!
Thoughts?
Putting aside the extreme impossibility of the ending to the book cause a notary public would be required. I totally loved it!
The witticism. The humor. The bit of bite women develop in their forties. The fight to be bad asses while really just wanting to be noticed, recognized, and loved by those closest us. The wisdom that comes luckily not too late in life to turn it all around.
Jojo definitely remains in my top favorite authors. Her characters are relatable (yupp, even the ultra rich snobby woman). Her view of the world through a woman’s eyes a bit cynical, yet tender.
Some books require or are best when read at a certain age. I feel this is one of those stories. I don’t think in my 20s I would have appreciated or would have truly understood these women. I may still have enjoyed the story, but I find it much more relatable and dear to me having lived a bit more life and experienced the shitstorm it can hurl at you and your friends. And also knowing that there is life, and even a better life, after letting go of some things from the past.
Quotable Quotes:
“There are some advantages to being an American woman over forty who no longer has any fucks left on the shelf, and he can see it.”
“He is the calmest person she has ever met…and this soothes her.”
Oh, how I know this feeling so well. David, this quote is all about you. And before you get smartassy about it, calmest is not the same as nicest. Overly nice people are suspect and not to be trusted! =P
“Not for the first time, [character] feels the loss of her old life like a wound.”
