Overview:
Young scientist Inti Flynn arrives in the Scottish Highlands with a singular purpose: to reintroduce wolves into the forests. Her efforts to rewild the dying landscape, however, are met with fierce opposition from the locals, who fear for their safety and way of life. When a farmer is mauled to death, Inti decides to bury the evidence, unable to believe her wolves could be responsible. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, is something more sinister at play? And will it happen again? [Read more…]

Would I Recommend It?
YES!
If you read and liked McConaghy’s Migrations you are bound to like this the same, if not more. I would go as far to say that I liked this one even more perhaps because I’m more a wolf than a bird fan. But maybe also because the underlying story was a tad less somber/depressing.
If you’re looking for this to be a mystery-mystery novel, it isn’t. There is mystery, but solving it is not the essence of this book.
Thoughts?
I LOVE this author’s style of writing.
Her writing is so bold, raw, and fierce.
I LOVE why she writes these books: Rewilding. Conservationism. Animals.
She writes with such heart for both the animals and those fighting for it and those who come in conflict with it.
Her stories contain a lot of hurt and the evil of human actions, but always end with hope, so much hope.
She brings me to tears with her words (most of the crying happened reading the Acknowledgments). I mean, even one of the antagonists, Red, in the story made me cry!!!
The parallels Inti has in looking at and solving the mystery of her wolves to solving her own life’s mystery is absolutely wonderful.
Just a “Comical” Sidenote:
Warning to those who don’t care for children/childbirth/motherhood with the same type of vehemence that I do not. This book contained the most gruesome birth scene by far that I’ve had to read in a book. Solidifies it further that I’m totally good to be without children, thank you for that Charlotte McConaghy.
