A Blizzard of Polar Bears

Overview:

Wildlife biologist Alex Carter is back, fighting for endangered species in the Canadian Arctic and battling for her life in this action-packed follow-up to A Solitude of Wolverines, “a true stunner of a thriller debut” (James Rollins) and “a great read” (Nevada Barr).

Fresh off her wolverine study in Montana, wildlife biologist Alex Carter lands a job studying a threatened population of polar bears in the Canadian Arctic. Embedded with a small team of Arctic researchers, she tracks the majestic bears by air, following them over vast, snowy terrain, spending days leaning precariously out of a helicopter with a tranquilizer gun, until she can get down on the ice to examine them up close. Would I Recommend It?
Yes, if you’re in the mood for a YA action-adventure with a dose of learning about animals, nature, and environmental issues.

Thoughts?
Another wonderful, fun-filled, action-adventure that is definitely on the ridiculous side of things in how well Alex Carter can handle anything that comes her way. A hardcore biologist who isn’t just a science geek, but an ice climbing, arctic sea scuba diving, sharp shooting, karate (but not) chopping, code deciphering, race car driving, vegetarian conservationist.

The action is absolutely beyond words over the top. And yet, I eat it all up. I love it. I am so happy that there’s an author out there who can write a book that appeals to adults and young adult readers. I wish there was a book series like this when I was in my teens.

The book also elicited a very heated lecture from my physics professor of a husband where I skeptically told him “polar bears aren’t white.” I went on the internet where apparently people are hell-bent on making this be a true statement. From Wiki to an article in the Washington Post. The amount of aggravation that this statement brought to my husband’s mind elicited much hysterical laughter on my end. So. To very much correct Alice Henderson and every other non-physics brained lunatic out there. Polar bears ARE white.True, their hair doesn’t have white pigment. But the very fact that their translucent hair traps air that then reflects white and thus we see them as white is the very definition of something being white.

Is Alice the greatest writer of all times? Most definitely not. These books should be read in the spirit of being entertained and to follow a character who very much cares about protecting animals and the health of our planet. I simply adore these stories and look forward to her next one in the series which is apparently coming out Fall of 2022!

And the title,A Blizzard of Polar Bears, is fantastic. Cause again. We don’t have collective noun for a grouping of polar bears as they don’t travel in groups. They are part of the bear family, but differ from bears in that they lead solitary lives. The moms stay with the cubs until they reach maturity, but then they all go their separate ways. And male polar bears will even eat their own young should hunger strike.
