Today Tonight Tomorrow

Overview:

Today, she hates him.

It’s the last day of senior year. Rowan Roth and Neil McNair have been bitter rivals for all of high school, clashing on test scores, student council elections, and even gym class pull-up contests. While Rowan, who secretly wants to write romance novels, is anxious about the future, she’d love to beat her infuriating nemesis one last time.

Tonight, she puts up with him.

Butterflies on top of butterflies! Endless amounts.

Would I Recommend It?
YES! If you’re looking for rom-com set in high school with haters to lovers.

Thoughts:
Butterflies on top of butterflies! Endless amounts. Okay, the book does end, so perhaps not endless. But my, oh my, this book just made me so happy and my belly so fluttery. I loved it so much more than I expected it to. It ended up being the perfect Valentine’s Day month read that I was hoping for.

I’d hold my breath. Grip the book. It took me back to my days of high school, but days that didn’t happen, but wish they had happened. Perhaps this story is close to my heart because I’m now married to my high school friend who was nothing more than just a friend in high school–we may have crushed on each other, but we didn’t admit it to each other. Or if I’m truly honest, I never even admitted it to myself. (He wore black head to toe, listened to heavy metal, and scored 1600 on his SAT. So, like, no: too dark and too smart for me.) So yeah, I loved it that the characters didn’t take some 14 years to realize that they’re supposed to be together. (It’s a rom-com, of course it’s gonna have a happy ending so don’t yell at me that I’m spoiling it. It’s not a thriller.) And yet, in some ways it was, because Solomon is so good at building up to that moment. That moment that we want so badly for our characters to happen.

I seriously had like goosebumps during some of the scenes. The anticipation just about kills you. I absolutely adored this author’s ability to draw me into how the characters were feeling. Just. Soooo good.

It’s also a good YA book in that it explains about Jewish culture without being preachy. It sheds light on the stigma Jewish people have to live with all because of past history and circumstance. I couldn’t help but think of my best friend from Hungary who is Jewish, but I seriously never knew that growing up. It was only after she stayed with my family for a year in the US that not so nice things started to be said. Not by me, but I do wish now I had known more. I wish I had this book at age 14 to have shed a bit of light into how my friend may have been feeling.

It’s also a fun story cause it takes place in Seattle. Anything set in Washington pretty much gets a thumbs up from me. But it was cool that I have been to some of the places in the book. I was able to guess some of the scavenger hunt clues.

As always, I adore reading the Author’s Note and Acknowledgment sections. I’m always curious to know what made the author write the story. This was Solomon’s first book with a happy story so good to know that if I want more happy ending stories then her first two books won’t be it. Those I should reserve for when I want to cry cause the author warned that she wrote dark-dark-dark ones before this book. She does have a new book coming out that sounds like a happy one, so yeah, I have it on pre-order with Barnes & Noble!
